The Coolpad Trio are here!
I'm guessing you remember Coolpad? The people behind Coolpad note 3 and note 3 lite. They've been silent till June and they've spontaneously come up with 3 more members to their family. The Coolpad sky 3, Coolpad Roar 3 and Coolpad Torino. What's up with these 3 new contenders? Are they better than the rest or are we just getting optimistic over them? Let's find out in this combined review.
Design: The trio follow the same design language as their predecessor, the note 3. They have a tall form factor with slightly thicker than usual edges. The Roar 3 is the thickest, at 9.3mm followed by Torino at 8.7mm and the Sky 3 is the slimmest, at 7.8mm. sky 3 and Roar 3 weigh 143gm whereas the Torino weighs more, at 167gm. The semi metallic construction of the sky 3 is definitely the most premium amount them, as the other 2 are made of plastic.
Display: All 3 phones have 720p IPS LCD displays. Torino and Sky 3 are 5.5 inchers and the Roar 3 is the smaller 5' sibling. Displays have never been a great point of Coolpad, as the note 3 had a mediocre display as well. But among these phones, the Torino definitely has the brightest and the most acceptable display panel. It also uses 2.5D curved glass so gives it a sleek look and feel.
Performance: There are quite a few differences here. The Coolpad sky 3 has a Mediatek MT6735P quad core processor clocked at 1.2GHz coupled with a Mali MP T720 GPU and 2GB of DDR3 RAM. The storage built in is 16GB expandable upto 128GB via SD card.
The Coolpad Torino runs on a slightly superior Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octacore processor clocked at 1.5GHz and an Adreno 405 GPU with 3GB of DDR3 RAM and 16GB internal storage, expandable only upto another 32GB. Specs are good but storage is slightly disappointing here.
The Coolpad Roar 3 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and an Adreno 306 GPU and a 2GB of DDR3 RAM. Storage onboard is 8GB, expandable upto 64GB via SD card.
Among the 3, the Torino is the only one with a fingerprint sensor, which works almost just as well as the earlier note 3. I'd say, 6/10 accuracy.
The phones run on company's own CoolUI.
Roar 3 runs on surprisingly old KitKat 4.4.3, Torino runs on lollipop 5.1 and Sky 3 is the latest, running on marshmallow 6.0.1. Although the UI is acceptably smooth, many consumers might question the choice of older version of Android on the Roar 3 smartphone.
Cameras: The sky 3 has 8mp front and rear cameras with CMOS sensors and f/2.2 apertures and weirder 83° field of view for selfies. Photos come out to be average at best, exposure and colors are usually off balance here😞. Selfies in the other hand, were quite good. The camera could take wide angled shots and details were arguably pretty decent.
The Torino has a 13mp rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, capable of recording 1080p video at 30fps, and a 5mp front camera. These sensors were the same ones that were on the note 3, or could be an iteration. Photos are good enough in bright lights, but tend to get smudgy and grainy in indoor shots. The selfie camera is pretty OK. Though not the best in the price.
The Roar 3 has an 8mp rear camera with the same f/2.2 aperture and a 5mp selfie snapper. Camera on the Roar 3 is not that good. Photos were not that great even in bright environment, and 720p video would often look for focus and couldn't keep up with movement. This purchase is definitely not for the camera.
Batteries: All 3 phones have identical 2500mAh battery cells. The standby is not that great, though the usage time is pretty decent on these. Especially on the smaller Roar 3.
Price: Coolpad Torino- 15,000 INR.
Coolpad sky 3- 12,000 INR.
Coolpad Roar 3- 9000 INR.
Conclusion: Coolpad have tried this 3 phone stunt to get their name back into the consideration list of 2016 smartphone consumers. My conclusion is, among the 3, the Torino is your best bet. But frankly, look elsewhere!😅
Sure they have their own stuff to offer for the price, but I believe you'll get a lot more for the budget of 15K, than here.
