Coolpad note 5 review!
Coolpad was the first company to introduce a fingerprint sensor on a budget smartphone. Their note 3 last year, gained a lot of attention, mainly for the inclusion of a biometric sensor for such a low price. Now that it has become common, they have to do something more to stand out in the market. So they've apparently come up a 'beast', the note 5! And this, is the Coolpad note 5 review.
Design: Thus phone has the common metal and glass fusion going on. The back is made out of aluminum and feels quite premium in the hand. There's a power/ sleep key on the right along with the sim tray. It's a hybrid tray and supports either dual sim or single sim with an SD card. On the left there's the volume rocker, there's a headphone jack up top and an old microUSB port on the bottom. The speaker grill is located on the back of the phone. The phone is quite hefty, at 173 gm and is 8.3 mm at thickness. It comes on Royal gold and space grey color options for now.
Display: The Coolpad note 5 has a 5.5' 1080p IPS LCD display at 401 ppi. The display is protected by a 2.5D curved scratch resistant screen. It's not specifically gorilla glass. I suspect it's just a tempered glass screen protector. Although it feels very solid, I wouldn't trust it's scratch resistance. The display however, is really good. The colors are vivid and punchy. It's bright enough to be viewed outdoors and offers great viewing angles. It's far better than the poor 720p screen of its predecessor, the note 3.
Performance: This so called 'beast', is powered by the Snapdragon 617 octacore processor clocked at 1.5 GHz along with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM and Adreno 405 GPU. Performance sadly, isn't the best. I mean it's powerful enough for everyday things, like browsing and light gaming, but when it comes to heavy stuff, it clearly struggles. Luckily it doesn't heat up, so that's great. There's 32 GB of onboard storage and it's expandable upto 64 GB. There's a rear mounted fingerprint sensor and it works great. It recognises and unlocks your phone is just 0.5 seconds. The phone tins on company's own CoolUI on top of Android marshmallow. It's a lot like iOS, with the control center and everything. I don't like it at all, but that's personal preference anyway.
Camera: The phone has a 13 mp rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and an 8 mp selfie snapper. The rear camera is capable of 1080p video recording and the front camera can record upto 720p. Images are decent, with quote a lot of noise in indoor shots. Outdoors, they're pretty ok. Every smartphone camera performs well in bright light. It's okay for a few occasional clicks but nothing to write home about.
Selfie camera is quite good. The large resolution captures good amount of details in it and the front facing LED flash helps out too. It's pretty bright, so be careful. In the end, it's just another budget camera with average image quality. That's that.
Battery: There's good news for the power users as this phone has a larger 4100 mAh battery unit. That's enough juice to keep you going for at least 6 hrs continuously. This, combined with that large screen makes it ideal for long hours of media consumption. Thumbs up for Coolpad, for this beefy battery.
Price: All this is great, but what about the price? You can buy the Coolpad note 5 at 10,999 INR or about . You'll get yourself a well built phone with a great fingerprint sensor and decent performance. It's a good buy of you don't rely too much on the camera😎👍.
