Xiaomi redmi pro review
Xiaomi is well known for It's bang for a buck smartphones. Now they're entering into the higher end segment and I'm not talking about their flagship mi5. This is the Xiaomi redmi pro. The redmi series was a midrange s3ries and now it's about to change! Let take a look at the standard edition of redmi pro.
Design: The redmi pro follows the aluminum design language as it's siblings like the redmi note 3, redmi 3s etc. The phone is quite well made, with rounded edges and smooth powder finished back. The power and volume buttons are on the right side as usual, and the sim tray is on the left. There is a USB type C port on the bottom, flanked by a speaker and a mic. Both are symmetrically machined. On the top there's a headphone jack and an infrared blaster! A fast diminishing flagship feature along with a secondary noise cancelling mic. The phone with battery weighs 174 gm and is 8.2 mm thick.
Display: This phone has a 5.5' 1080p OLED display! This is probably the first Xiaomi phone I've seen with an OLED display. It comes around 401 pixels per inch. There doesn't seem to be any gorilla glass protection but the panel has 2.5D curved glass on it. The display looks stunning, with nice deep saturated colors of an OLED display and excellent viewing angles. I'm very impressed with this display panel and I think anyone will definitely be satisfied with it.
Performance: This phone is an absolute beast of a performer. It's powered by the Mediatek Helios X20 deca-core chipset clocked at 2.1 GHz along with the new Mali T880 MP4 GPU with 3 GB of DDR3 RAM. Performance was very good, the phone was smooth and responsive. There were no noticeable lags or delays while opening apps or multitasking. The phone does exhibit slight heating while playing games, but the metal body quickly dissipates it out of the phone. There are no thermal throttling issues though, which is good. There is 32 GB of internal storage exportable upto 128 GB via microSD card.
The phone runs on MIUI 8 on Android 6.0 marshmallow. There aren't any Google features like doze mode, or Google now-on-tap. Just like in the mi5. Oh well!
There is a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone and it works great. You can directly jump onto the UI of the phone from standby, after unlocking it with your finger. It's very fast and meant to be used everyday.
Camera: This is the interesting part. The redmi pro is the first Xiaomi phone to host a dual camera system. One is a 13 mp sensor and the other is a 5 mp sensor with f/2.0 aperture, made by Sony. Both can be simultaneously used to get sharp and contrast filled photos. That's the advantage of 2 sensors. They usually share the work and create better exposed, more balanced images. Theres a dual led flash unit too. The front camera is a 5 mp sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The front camera is capable of producing some crisp shots and 720p videos at 30 fps. The cameras on the phone are overall, above averahe and can be expected t deliver some good photos in decent lighting.
Battery: The redmi pro houses a large 4050 mAh battery capable of quick charging. Same as the redmi note 3. This should get you easily through a day especially thanks to that new OLED panel.
Price: The Xiaomi redmi pro standard variant costs about 12,000 INR. This is an excellent choice if you're into a phone with new tricks up its sleeve and does it's job, well under a budget.
